Short description

I would like to add vdo.ninja for consideration to a proposed videoconferencing section. This tool is primarily aimed at advanced users, but there is a lot to like.

Like Jitsi, it can be self-hosted. Unlike Jitsi, no account is needed to use their infrastructure. It’s built to work with OBS, but you don’t need to use that feature. You can use it for 1:1 (or small group) calls.

Why I think this tool should be added

It reasonably matches the current list of requirements at the time of writing:

  • Allows to join calls via links without registration for people who join the host.
    • Accounts are not required to host or join. Rooms can be locked to specific emails or email domains if desired.
  • Enforces use of end to end encryption for both the video stream and if applicable the chat.
    • This can be done with the e2ee setting. Certain elements are encrypted without the e2ee setting.
  • Does not require an app to join the call and must be available on cross platform.
    • This is true.
  • Must allow for to join calls on Linux, MacOS, Windows, Android, and iOS through browser or app.
    • This is true.
  • Must offer background blurring
  • Must not require to enable video and allow audio only calls.
    • This is true.
  • Must offer a mute option
    • This is true.
  • Must offer to disable recording or have no recording
    • There is no recording by default. Recordings can optionally be captured.
  • Must offer to disable transciptions and AI assistants or not have them.
    • Not applicable.

Additionally, the application is open source and can be self-hosted.
