Hi, there are two important backups on my GOS that I’d like to auto sync to the cloud (Proton Drive) - Aegis codes + Signal chat.

Atm, I have auto back up enabled on these 2 apps to local folders and then I use Syncthing to sync those to a Proton Drive folder on my Mac. Essentially, I just would like to have a back up for these 2 apps to Drive.

Lately, I realized that they discontinued Syncthing for Android. While it’s still working now, I want to avoid keeping unmaintained app on my phone. I heard of Syncthing-fork but not sure how safe it - think someone already recommended it here but still pending approval.

Please do not suggest to sync between owned devices as I’m not tech savvy enough to have or maintain my own server + would like to avoid in case my other device e.g. my desktop broke down.

Tyvm in advance.

Rclone for android : [GitHub - newhinton/Round-Sync: An android cloud file manager, powered by rclone. Visit https://roundsync.com for more information!](https://github.com/newhinton/Round-Sync)

hopefully one day proton (and other e2ee cloud storage) will have sync in native apps

Thanks! I’ll explore this. I agree! Proton has it on Windows already, cant wait for it to be implemented on mobile too

So I tried to set it up. Input my username, password, and 2FA. But somehow I kept getting error getting directory contents.

Do you happen to know why or do you know if they have a forum or any support? Their [documentation](https://roundsync.com/usage/saf.html) on Round Sync seems to be missing.

What I had to do to get it to work is set up proton drive on rsync on the CLI (either desktop or termux should work, I used termux), then import the rsync configuration into the round sync app

Appreciate your reply! Unfortunately, I’m not tech savvy enough to fully understand how it works. Would you mind referring me to some written or video instructions on how to work with Termux to set up the proton drive config and then how to import it?

I presume you can simply use the import config option on round sync, and then select “yes” when it prompted me to replace the current config?

Second part is correct. I can look real quick for you but you should be able to just duck it and find something

So turns out proton drive support is pretty new on rclone, so docs are hard to find. However, running rclone --help shows pretty well how to set it up,just make sure you have the latest version

Yeah I did. I found [this](https://rclone.org/protondrive/) but it seems the config looks similar to the out of the box set up on Round Sync. The only thing I noticed there is this note.

> The Proton Drive encryption keys need to have been already generated after a regular login via the browser, otherwise attempting to use the credentials in rclone will fail.

According to this [Reddit thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonDrive/comments/14lgzl3/protondrive_encryption_key/), it uses the Proton Mail PGP key, but I already have a public key generated under “Email encryption keys” so I have no clue what I have to do next.

I think I just did rclone config and did it exactly as I would have on round sync. Only difference is CLI worked and app didn’t

However if you’re talking about device backups, setting it up this way doesn’t work very well, so I wouldn’t recommend it

Ah I see, that makes sense. Thanks!

I was thinking of setting up a task to automatically sync the local folder to Proton. On the surface, it makes sense and could work. Why wouldn’t you recommend it?

If all else fails, I’m thinking of manually doing a backup via GOS File Manager since it does have access to my Proton Drive.

Folder sync should work, I just had a lot of trouble getting full device backups to work consistently. Maybe you’ll have better luck, that was just my experience

I tried using Termux installed from Fdroid repo using Obtainium (Github didn’t work for me somehow.) Followed the instructions [here](https://rclone.org/protondrive/), and a remote was created. But, when I used `rclone lsd remote` it returned an error “Directory not found”

I have this feeling that something is wrong with my Proton setup…

Using rclone / Round Sync with Proton Drive was a pain for me in the past, especially with 2FA, and Proton does not have any official supports for rclone either. Eventually, I have to use other cloud storage to backup my encrypted Aegis via Round Sync.

I see. Thanks for sharing! Yeah for now, I just put a weekly reminder for myself to do a manual backup until hopefully Proton provides native support or Syncthing-fork is approved.

Mega has sync option in its android app , open source and e2ee

May want to look into Foldersync. I have been using it since 2018 for syncing my Signal backups to mega. While I don’t see Proton drive listed, it is possible to sync to any webdav or local smb folder or other cloud storage option. just create a shared folder on your mac. then download and setup folder sync to mirror one way from your phone to your mac. Set how often you want and make sure its set to wifi only only and thats it.

Yes, Foldersync is what I use. It doesn’t support Proton Drive, but you can use any cloud storage for Signal and Aegis as the backups themselves are encrypted already.

I think the only E2EE storage supported by Foldersync is MEGA, because they have an API that third-party apps can use. (Unlike Proton Drive, Tresorit, or Filen)

why use closed sourced app when the official open source app does the job ?

rclone supports proton drive so round sync should work fine , filen has developed a beta version of rclone , so official support should be there soon ™

Are you saying that proton drive supports syncing from phone?

Also, there is a paid version so at least you have an idea where they are getting money from and non mining your data. It is all personal preference.

Hallo! I would like to sync backup of my Signal chat (Molly-FOSS on Graphene OS) with a folder stored in Proton drive.
But Proton drive native app for Android doesn’t allow to schedule any operation except photo backup, and Molly doesn’t allow to select Proton drive as destination of backup, while it allows to select other remotes like Nextcloud. I tried to schedule the synchronization of the local Molly backup to Proton drive with Round Sync. It started but failed. Maybe it depends on the fact that backup file is bigger than 5 giga. In the next few days my proton account has not been working on the android installation of Round Sync, nor on the installation of RClone for linux. I tried to configure again proton as backend, but it didn’t work on both the devices.
As for linux, I’m waiting for proton to release the official app. According to last month’s announcements it should be out by the end of summer. As for android, I thought that maybe I can schedule the operation with an other app, that see Proton as destination. Do you thing that termux can be a good solution? Do you know if it can cpy or synchronize folders with Proton? Is it a reliable app in terms of privacy and security? Thank you!

You could you try Syncthing.

---

## Post 25 by @atlas1972 — 2025-08-31T20:17:44Z

Thank you. I already use Syncthing for other things. I didn’t use with Molly backup, because this seems too big. Once I read that Syncthing is recommended just for small files. But maybe I’m wrong. I will try. Thank you.
Can anyone help me to understand why it seems so difficolult to mantain the configuration of Proton Drive on RClone and Round Sync? Thank you

Is the syncthing fork for Android working similarly as the old syncthing btw? It’s still not listed on the PG site so I am still doing a manual backup to Proton Drive instead.

## Post 27 by @user1 — 2025-09-06T10:28:40Z

I have no idea. I do a manual backup on proton drive too.

## Post 28 by @Stewen — 2026-04-07T19:21:00Z

I have just tested Syncthing and Syncthing-Fork with Proton drive folder on my computer and so far it works.

I will keep testing and maybe there will be some issues or conflicts but for anyone hesitating, it’s worth trying.

you can also use [GitHub - gulp79/Round-Sync: An android cloud file manager, powered by rclone. Visit https://roundsync.com for more information! · GitHub](https://github.com/gulp79/Round-Sync) and set interval to copy to proton drive directly without relying on your computer

## Post 30 by @Stewen — 2026-04-09T05:26:18Z

Yes, you can and I was considering it. But you have to give away your Proton credentials and the right to do whatever it wants on the cloud. Seems risky to me. Don’t you think?
