Skiff Credit: Should I use my 55€ for over a year for a "free", usually paid plan?

Hello there!

I’m currently contemplating whether I should use the 55€ of credits that I have - which would grant me 13.75 months worth of Skiff Essential billed monthly OR if I should wait until I have a more stable source of income to eventually pay for it by myself without the use of awarded credits

of course I am aware that by using the credits they gave me by completing various tasks I am not supporting them financially.

In comparison, I already use Proton for Mail, Calendar and VPN although their prices (for what I need, at least) are higher by ~12€ per year (4€ versus 5€ for their cheapest plans billed monthly).

For the 13.75 months I would have Skiff for, it would provide better value for the time being as I do not currently need cloud storage or a paid VPN, and it does provide some features I’m interested in that I don’t get out of the free plan on either Skiff or Proton

(primarily I am interested in auto-reply, schedule-send and mail-filters, which I would get essentially for free by following through with the Skiff offer)

Of course, because I don’t need to pay with actual money for these 13.75 months - e.g a bank/credit card - it would save me money too.

EDIT: 13.75 months would be until 11 Jan 2025.

I’ll be waiting, thanks in advance to everyone!

They’re giving you 13 months for free, because they can afford to do that. Why would you go through the trouble of acquiring these credits if you don’t want to use them?

my first thought was paying out-of-pocket and using the credits when I cannot pay for a month - this way I would support them financially and also have a fallback for when it isn’t financially viable for me to pay, even for a longer period of time.

edit: additionally, my little monkey brain doesn’t wanna see the numbers go down.

I would support them financially

They don’t need your financial support if they are giving you 13 months for free.

have a fallback for when it isn’t financially viable for me to pay, even for a longer period of time.

If this is your concern, you can take the free 13 months, and for each month deposit the cost for that month in a savings account that earns interest to have in case you ever need it.

I know, but I want to support them. They are providing people with privacy, I wish to support that goal.

That’s a good point, thanks for the input!

There are nonprofit organizations fighting for privacy that would appreciate that money more, such as EFF. Skiff has enough venture capitalist funding to last for a long time without your support, and are willing to give you over a year of their product for free.

That’s fair, I already planned to eventually regularly donate to EFF, The Markup and Signal anyways.

Thanks again!
