Signal is working on a standalone version of Signal Desktop that does not require a mobile phone

I don’t have much to add here, though as far as I know, partially from reading the topic thread I’ll link below (which I suggest you give a look) there are VoIP options for use with Signal that work outside of the USA.

In my case, yes I have retained control of the VoIP number which is tied to a Signal account.

They do! I’ve been using Signal with a VoIP number on Signal-CLI without any smartphone for around two years, and I know at least 50 other people who are doing the same

Google Voice is only available in the US.

I did not used google voice. I use a canadian voip number.

Not a great solution as privacy goes tho. I have 2 lifetime hushed (canadian numbers) that I use on another android device.

This android phone has a VPN and only the hushed app installed through aurora store.

Hushed works with Signal?!

This is news to me. I used Hushed to create my anonymous Telegram account, but it was my understanding that it didn’t work for WhatsApp, Signal, or most online services that require a phone number. I don’t like the idea paying monthly fees indefinitely to keep a number I only use for verification.

I didn’t even know Hushed has lifetime numbers.

Do they still offer them? How much did you pay for yours?

Very nice, that would mean Signal will be working on GNU/Linux phones as well (they can run the Desktop app and receive SMS)
