I don’t check my email frequently, but I did today and it was full of emails from PG forum.
I think that something like this should be opt-in.

Presumably spam or something. You can even use yopmail, tempmail or something as disposable as that and never look at the inbox again.
I’m pretty sure it’s just inherited from Discourse.
Email can be used to recover accounts, so that would be horrible.
With yopmail you get a main address and then an alt address. You are unable to access the email with the alt and you need to know the actual email. But you can use that alt to sign up with. So even if your email was discovered, someone couldn’t gain access to your account with just that.
That’s a horrific explanation, but if you try yopmail it’s really straight forward.
Alternatively, just use an alias and turn it off.
Yes unfortunately it’s a Discourse thing. IMO email should be totally optional for forums.
This is a privacy forum - email shouldn’t be used at all!
If I were setting up a privacy forum, I would use a login that matches a public key to a private key or something like that.
But since we’re using email, I don’t mind the notifications. I say an ‘opt out’ would be better.
