Both protocols seem to serve the purpose of obscuring packet data. Does one render the other obsolete?

No, they’re completely different. [Shadowsocks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowsocks) is used to circumvent internet censorship, [DAITA](https://mullvad.net/en/vpn/daita) is used to hide what you’re doing over your VPN such as which websites you’re visiting.

Shadowsocks is obsolete now, it’s very easy to detect.

True.

vless-based protocol is one of the best now.

see my other post for the reasons:

ProtonVPN and Tor Webtunnel did not consider advanced encrypted traffic analysis in their design, but the Chinese GFW has been performing ETA to detect proxies for a decade. There is another TLS-based proxy protocol called Trojan that did not mitigate this, and it was detected and blocked in China ever since 2022.
