Revolut used to play very well with custom operating system, Now the way they changed the Play Integrity API you will no longer be able to login.
My advice is fortunately the same as GrapheneOS’s
[https://x.com/GrapheneOS/status/1865760157075902901](https://x.com/GrapheneOS/status/1865760157075902901)

Maybe don’t take it as far as management but anything if it means a little and if it means you will should go a long way to show Revolut that we care…

Shoutout to `@PrivacyFounder` On the other site, this is what appears when you try to login:

 ![signal-2024-12-08-23-29-04-932](//forum-uploads.privacyguidesusercontent.com/original/2X/2/2607faa896a0b7a1ee2ed9435edd304c2a4d2831.jpeg)

I know that if you wanted private payments. Revolut and others Are not the way to go at all but I thought I’d be nice to point out in this ever evolving world and maybe we can make a change on apps like them that do these kind of practices where they do things like take away people’s ability to login because of Play Intergrity API when you could before. It’s all about Digital Rights here

Try downgrade the app, 10.56.2 (build number 1005605917) works on my end.

1. This isn’t my screenshot
2. Yes while older versions will work an I am in one. The fact alone that revolut does this says alot. And trust me long term this isn’t a viable method. This has happened to me where After many versions that I haven’t updated. Revolut will force you to update anyway at some point.

## Post 4 by @TinFoilHat — 2024-12-08T21:47:53Z

Well this is not Revolut’s first time afaik, I think it might have something to do with the SDK?

What user (customers) should do is to report to Revolut CS as it cannot be solved by GOS, if it is SDK issue then Revolut will push another update shortly to “fix” that.

Companies like these should be held responsible. The fact that they did not create the offending anti-competitive Play Integrity API doesn’t mean their use of it isn’t anti-competitive in and of itself.

Positive that they are at least willing to bring it to the developers attention. Though obviously they aren’t the decision makers.

On a related note, does anyone know of any instances of apps actually implementing [**hardware attestation**](https://grapheneos.org/articles/attestation-compatibility-guide) on GrapheneOS to maintain compatibility?

Sorry I recommended them Aproov, as a quick Brave search didn’t make it obvious Auditor could also be used for verification/

What alternative do you use that has one-time use cards and free virtual cards ?

I genuinely believe they are doing this for security. Like they also have done things like PIN scrambling, etc.
So maybe it is up to the security team, and not top-down.

It’s not using auditor, it uses the standard **[hardware attestation API](https://developer.android.com/privacy-and-security/security-key-attestation)** which is part of AOSP. GrapheneOS recommends referring apps which implement Play Integrity to the previously linked attestation compatibility guide. The hardware attestation API provides much more robust security guarantees than the Play Integrity API. **[Source](https://xcancel.com/GrapheneOS/status/1865760157075902901#m)**.

The Play Integrity API provides no security guarantees when it accepts devices which haven’t received security patches in 8 years, but not GrapheneOS, which offers unrivaled security. **[Source](https://xcancel.com/GrapheneOS/status/1865882303467307349#m)**.

## Post 18 by @Milus — 2024-12-09T11:29:25Z

I think we (and even GrapheneOS team) are missing the corporate point of view: There are billions of Android phones out there, with and without Original OS, and their App needs to support them while maintining security.
If Google claims they are “secured” by using their APIs, you bet they will do it instead of handling the phones case by case.
They can´t hold GrapheneOS responisble in case something goes wrong with their security model, but they can for Google.

---

## Post 19 by @anon42475305 — 2024-12-09T11:31:34Z

No, Google accepts no liability for use of their API, that wouldn’t make any sense. What these companies are doing by using the Play Integrity API in this way is blatantly illegal under anti-trust law.

---

## Post 20 by @Milus — 2024-12-09T11:35:41Z

I think my point still stands. They would understandably follow Google guide lines / recommendations over GrapheneOS.
I still think “illegal” is not the correct term. No one is forcing the Apps to use Google APIs instead of something else. They are doing simply what they think is “best practice” specially for a financial insitution.

---

## Post 21 by @anon39279085 — 2024-12-09T11:36:04Z

I think I’ll have to disagree.

From my perspective it is Google’s Fault for making and marketing Play Integrity API as a Security API.

As pointed out by someone who I had a agree to disagree conversation. This is indeed Google’s fault. If google was honest or implemented in a way where it does support custom ROMs this wouldn’t be a problem but they intentionally don’t, Unless they have fixed it, Play Integrity API apparently passes even with an 8 year old EOL Phone or something which is crazy when GOS is really more secure.

I do not in any way Blame revolut in this situation, They just took Google’s word without realizing the implications as such.

So Google takes most of the blame than Revolut.

I hope we can agree to disagree from here.

Look, I am not arguing GOS is more secure. However Integrity API does prevent running from emulators.

Doesn’t mean it doesn’t have side effects

---

## Post 23 by @anon42475305 — 2024-12-09T11:41:28Z

Malice or ill-intent isn’t required for an act to be illegal. Using the Play Integrity API artificially prevents other platforms like GrapheneOS, which maintain Android app compatibility, from fairly competing with Google’s certified Android. That is the textbook definition of anti-competitive.

I think you give Revolut too little credit, they aren’t stupid, they have competent cyber-sec people who should understand that Play Integrity is pure bs.

So does hardware attestation. And Play Integrity is easily bypassed to run in an emulator or wherever you want since you can pretend to be an old insecure device.

Customer support is usually clueless about this, that’s why they tend to mistake it that way. (what they could’ve done is obviously escalate from customer support to technical customer
support). The agent on the other line probably really had no idea about it until it was said correctly. It happens and if I was in their case would probably be at the same conclusion if I was that clueless. As I said before it wasn’t escalated to Technical which they should have so that seems as expected.

I also wish they gave the timestamps to confirm but they did not so.

Edit 2: If you want to treat it as playing devil’s advocate here that’s fine by me

I’m not sure how one update in a year has any bearing on the security of the device. The **only** way to run a remotely secure version of Android is to be on the latest Android version. There is **no** LTS branch, and only patches for the most severe vulnerabilities are ever backported. A device running Android 13 with a security update from the past year is **not** and should **not** be considered secure.

Regardless, the security argument falls apart completely because if Google / app developers actually cared about security, they would allow GrapheneOS to pass their checks.

I could see my transactions through the web app, but I couldn’t find a way to actually send money to a friend or to a bank account. I could however use the virtual card details for filling online payment forms, but that is not the primary use of Revolut in my case.

Do you have a source for that? Becauss I will assume Play Integrity relies on some encrypted key to verify the authenticity of the OS, otherwise it would be totally useless

Not even Google Wallet requires MEETS\_STRONG\_INTEGRITY. There is the intermediate MEETS\_DEVICE\_INTEGRITY which that tool will allow you to pass but which GrapheneOS does not pass.

Also the web app is requiring the app to authenticate fully and use more functions, the email code is only for viewing some basic stuff (give it a try and see what you are able to do there with and without app). Then I tried to use the live chat which is kind of working, but only for as long as you stay on the browser window, otherwise you are required to log back in and the chat disappears…

Not sure why you are encouraging people to avoid crucial OS security updates. This issue is solely due to Revolut and Google’s anti-competitive practices, nothing more, nothing less. The fact that you got logged out after updating is purely coincidental.

A good opportunity to log in one last time to close your account

honestly if revolut just does absolutely nothing after the Custom ROM users protesting I can see myself ending up to Wise. Though I really don’t want to for 2 things:

1. Revolut offers savings account
2. If the data safety on the Google Play Store for both is anything to go by at this point I genuinely prefer Revolut. More importantly it’s genuinely asked permission for inter apps communication. Thank god they ask because if they didn’t it’s just scary. Can say revolut does the same sure but at least there’s no data potentially Being shared. Again if that alone is anything to go by.

TradeRepublic has better rates with a 3% annual rate.

Alrite I will just file a complain and close the Revolut account.

Will also help them spread their words.

It’s hard to know which neobank to trust going forward. Many don´t even seem to have a channel where you can ask if they are going to implement these practices.

I had tons of problems getting the N26 app to work on both iodéOS and GrapheneOS last year and eventually had to close the account. Without the app it was indeed a nightmare. Took me over a month of sending them mails and hassling them to get my money back.

Disappointing. They probably consider every custom OS to be “insecure”, which feels very reductive of efforts like GrapheneOS. Hope this changes.

Does Wise also have one-time use cards and free virtual cards?

Wise doesn’t have one time use cards but the rest yes.

And does it allow you to block payments from a vendor, warn you before auto-renewal kicks in, and allow you to set payment limits per card?

I don’t know if could live without those

That I can’t comment as I have not officially used it.
Maybe for the card it has I don’t think the renewal notification if I go by close assumption

They ban logins on GrapheneOS. Users who were already logged in have been able to continue using the app as usual.

My set-up with Wize:

Not the best privacy-wise, but they might just be more upfront than Revolut.

yeah the upfrontness is is nice but the fact that they “may share (these) data with third parties” :grimacing:

[P.S. I encourage people to view the policies for themselves before making a conclusion, I’m just forming my specific point]

Bur hey at the cost of your data being shared (or sole or whatever) Wise works on Graphene? You choose at this point.

You should check the privacy policy. I recently realised that many apps are completely dishonest on the data safety since it’s self-reported and not verified in any way.

> [@Hackers Claim Massive Breach of Location Data Giant (Gravy Analytics), Threaten to Leak](https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/hackers-claim-massive-breach-of-location-data-giant-gravy-analytics-threaten-to-leak/23832/11):

> Perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it seems to me that many of these apps are blatantly lying in the ‘Data safety’ category on the Google Play Store. I would honestly expect Google to at least take action when these apps when they are caught lying. For example: play_button Table of Top 10 Apps on List with Third-Party Location Sharing Disclosure(s) Given that Gravy Analytics is a location tracking company, it seems to me that as many as 50% of the top ten apps on this list are potentially lying …

Well they are not marketed as one time payments cards but I believe that you can create and delete them as much as you want. Maybe ask support if there is an anti abuse limit but you still have room for this type of use cases.
There even is a button to “replace” your digital card with a new one and it deletes the selected card and creates you a new card in like 1 second.

No.

Idk. Anyway there is a hard limit on digital cards so it’s not hard to watch the expiration dates… You can have only 3 digital cards.

Yes, monthly and daily. You can customize
