The service seems abandoned

## Post 2 by @dngray — 2024-06-14T04:31:20Z

It does seem none of the repositories [have been even touched in 2024](https://github.com/orgs/stingle/repositories). I wonder what happened to @alexamiryan seems not any activity on their [github profile](https://github.com/alexamiryan).

## Post 3 by @ad77 — 2024-06-14T04:36:59Z

It has not been touched once in 2024 and only twice in 2023. Many issues have piled up with no response.

It doesn’t look like there are any new issues since 2023 besides one feature request. The others have responses anyways. It’s common for issues to pile up in an issue tracker when they are low priority.

I haven’t heard of any complaints with Stingle yet. I would rather remove things based on actual problems, rather than arbitrary cutoff dates for recent development.

I understand that, but I’m also not too keen on listing projects that no longer seem to be recieving updates. After all, it is in our [general criteria](https://www.privacyguides.org/en/about/criteria/) that tools should be in active development:

> The tools that we recommend should be actively developed, unmaintained projects will be removed in most cases.

Stingle investor here. The project is very much alive and we are getting new users every day. Critical issues are being addressed and we are looking for contributors.

That’s interesting because I remember Picocrypt had a message from the developer in its repo saying he didn’t have time to maintain it anymore but it was OK because it was pretty stable at that point.

I went to check and found this:

> We’ve Moved!:sparkles:

> In an effort to make Picocrypt more open to future developments and maintenance from the community, this repository will be moving to [github.com/Picocrypt](https://github.com/Picocrypt). While future developments will likely take place there, this repository will still exist as a trusted and reliable “backup” for people who need the highest level of security and stability. For people who are more open to experimental (and potentially less stable) software, I encourage you to move over to the new Picocrypt organization’s repositories. For more details, see [here](https://github.com/HACKERALERT/Picocrypt/issues/186). Thank you all for your support along the way!

Which is excellent news.

Then atleast release bug fixes or minor updates periodically instead of going months without anything. Since this is marketed as a privacy friendly cloud storage, regular updates will instill confidence in its users.

Hi @rahar - if you’re able to verify your affiliation with Stingle please send me a DM so I can tag your account here.

## Post 10 by @alexamiryan — 2024-06-17T12:47:39Z

Yes Stingle is alive and soon Android client will receive new updates. Also we are developing desktop client.

## Post 11 by @jonah — 2024-06-17T12:50:41Z

Thanks for the update! Since nobody has any actual complaints, this sounds good to me :+1:

Marking this thread as #rejected.

## Post 12 by @jerm — 2024-12-11T20:32:06Z

There haven’t been any updates yet till now…

## Post 13 by @moonwriting — 2024-12-11T21:22:18Z

I think we should take another look at removing Stingle as there hasn’t been any updates even when the developer promised to ship updates soon. As of now, the iOS version hasn’t received any updates in two years. Like @freddy already mentioned earlier, Stingle doesn’t even meet the general criteria anymore because of this situation.

You only need to take a look at the [Stingle subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/StinglePhotos/), where people are not exactly showing their love for the project.

Since we are already recommending Ente, that has been doing amazing job with their product, I would argue that it is even a bit insulting for Ente to be listed on the same page with a company that doesn’t seem to care anymore and has more or less abandoned their product.

## Post 14 by @anon42475305 — 2024-12-11T21:48:28Z

I agree. It seems very bizarre to me that the developers promised an update was coming soon and keep insisting that the project is alive. We’ve taken their word for it once, but without concrete action, I don’t see how we can keep recommending Stingle. I can, of course, see the value in having options (i.e. not just recommending Ente), but in this case, Stingle is no longer a suitable alternative

## Post 15 by @ph00lt0 — 2024-12-11T23:45:20Z

this indeed needs re-evalauation. Is anyone out here using Stringle at all even? I dont know anyone using it. Generally with services like this it best not be a one man show [Contributors to stingle/stingle-photos-android · GitHub](https://github.com/stingle/stingle-photos-android/graphs/contributors)

Since @alexamiryan is here maybe he can share more info?

I see mainly people complaining about the lack of updates, like what is happening here, but I do not really see many complaints about the product itself. In fact mainly the opposite, like [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/StinglePhotos/comments/1fr6wxs/do_not_download_stingle/) comment:

> […] it’s a shame because Stingle is great and nothing compares even now.

@dngray originally reviewed this app when we added photo recommendations, so I will leave this one for him to handle I think

## Post 18 by @alexamiryan — 2024-12-12T23:24:43Z

There was some pause in development, but now it will resume. Nevertheless Stingle is a live product with paid customers who use it everyday. Current versions doesn’t have any major problems and further development will be focused on new features.

What about the android app update that was coming soon™ 6 months ago, is it almost ready? What about the desktop application which has been ~ 4 years in the works and was 2 months away from shipping 3 years ago? Not gonna lie, these sound like empty promises to me, but I will gladly be proven wrong.

Hey thanks for adding in! And welcome back to the forum.

I really appreciate that you build such nice app. However I also personally when making tool selections look at long-livety expectations of a product. Now when we initially started with the photo recommendations all was still newish and Ente as competitor was not as well established as it now seems to be. Now one can never be getting garantees on future but it worries me that you seem to be essentially the only contributor.

Besides that, I do wonder if no single security (even if rated low) finding has been reported throughout all this time of no updates? Either you write truely amazingly robust software, or nobody inspected it, or nobody reported it, or it didn’t get patched. Neither of those answers after the first I would say would be great. I cant think of a software ever being “finished”.

Now I really do not want to undermine your efforts. It is amazing that you built this in the first place. But hope you could add your thoughts on these concerns. Anyhow I do understand this project isn’t having your focus, but thst just makes it hard for me to recommend.

## Post 21 by @alexamiryan — 2025-01-04T00:08:53Z

From the beginning of the project, we have received only 1 security vulnerability report, which was a false one, reporter didn’t read the code carefully. However we have received a lot of contributions in form usability bug fixes and even one very obscure one in the math logic of video playback. I guess the answer to your question is the first one

We already knew that there have been no releases since October 2023 for Android.
[The only release for iOS is an “initial release”.](https://github.com/stingle/stingle-photos-ios/releases)
[Last closed issue for Stingle for Android was in April 2023.](https://github.com/stingle/stingle-photos-android/issues?q=is%3Aissue%20state%3Aclosed) [For iOS, it was in September 2022.](https://github.com/stingle/stingle-photos-ios/issues?q=is%3Aissue%20state%3Aclosed)
Anyone can see what Android version does the app target ? Android 14 support came with the latest release in 2023.
[Looks like that their users can’t change their email in the iOS app.](https://github.com/stingle/stingle-photos-ios/issues/85).
When looking at code frequency in their different repositories on Github, no activity appears in years :

@ph00lt0 @jonah @freddy shouldn’t we remove the tool? There hasn’t been a single commit since 2023. Not a single one across the organisation.

While I can understand the tool is “mature”, it still needs to be maintained, so small changes for Android versions for example.

I wouldn’t be certain any security vulnerability would be fixed timely.

We can remove it, but state to Stingle @alexamiryan that should active development restart, we can list them again (after a small period of time).

It appears to be completely dead now. [Stingle.org](http://Stingle.org) is dead, while the play store app is still available.

## Post 25 by @dngray — 2025-06-28T06:38:20Z

I think it’s time to say goodbye to this service as there doesn’t seem to be any activity. Only a matter of time until it is removed from Google Play when the minimum API level increases.

Added PR for this [update!: Remove Stingle, unmaintained since 2023 by dngray · Pull Request #3066 · privacyguides/privacyguides.org · GitHub](https://github.com/privacyguides/privacyguides.org/pull/3066)

The website isn’t dead, but it doesn’t work with some DNS providers, like my VPN’s works with cloudflare though.

Yep, appears to be working for me now too. No new blog updates in over 2yrs though. I’d say it’s still dead IMO.
