One major obstacle preventing me from using XMR more often is that recurring payments are much easier with traditional payment methods. Are there any wallets or systems that allow for recurring payments for donations/subscriptions?
If you want recurring payments with cryptocurrency, the best means to do so in February 2025 is to use something like server wallets. (I don’t know if the linked service supports Monero today, or will in the future. This is an example, not an endorsement.)
However, this requires a bit of trust in whoever’s running the server to not just run off with all your money.
Companies that build these kinds of features typically use TEEs (e.g., Intel SGX or AWS Nitro) to limit their own employees’ access to the enclave (which should be the only entity capable of decrypting the secret needed to reconstruct the wallet).
There’s a lot of hand-waving when it comes to the security of TEEs. To be blunt: They’re not perfect, but many project managers that reach for them believe they’re close enough to perfect.
Make your own decisions based on whatever personal risk calculus makes the most sense to you.
