Given that there hasn’t been any commit pushed to ProtonVPN github with 5.18.75.0 release last week, there is a new version of it for update in Google play.
Does this mean we aren’t quite installing “open-source” apps? (at the time of release i mean).
when people want to verify their app source code, what are they doing if source code is uploaded after people have installed the app already?
Can miss something, but Google Play version is 5.18.75.0, the GitHub version with published sources are 5.18.75.0 also.
But it’s literally “just a number”. It still does not mean that the version on GitHub and in Play are the same. One needs signal-like reproducible builds to check if sources and binaries are the same. Or compile all the binaries, or install software from Fdroid, that compiles apks(and trust them instead of the developer).

When i check earlier it was 5.18.84.0, then it was switch back to .75, i have seen this happen multiples of times (i use Aurora Store, haven’t checked default google play for ProtonVPN since i don’t want to sing in to Google on my OS).
I had heard somebody mentioning similar situation about Telegram(off-topic but they said its suspicious to delay source code,
Could it be Beta version? i don’t see any menu for in in Aurora but I have seen it as an option on friends’ phone

For the record, Proton supports Wireguard. You can simply use the official Wireguard client (official apk), and don’t need the Proton “app” or even Google at all.

I don’t think this is true. Care to elaborate about what the client does that cannot be replicated with a barebones WG client?
I used Amnezia VPN app with Proton configs before to bypass restrictions. I remember it worked fine. Maybe you might want to check that out.
I’m no VPN guru, but the difference between connection vs no-connection is obvious .
but search about DPI‑resistance, Shadowsocks, AmneziaWG, TLS Fragmentation, WiregaurdOnTLS (present on ProtonVPN android but STILL lacking in Linux, making ProtonVPN in Linux left behind while its android counterpart works decently, even for the same .conf file).
some of VPN apps just have better support for these, like Windscribe has by default.
even ProtonVPN itself is currently shipping a beta custom-made Wiregaurd code base in its current android app(which doesn’t work for me)
Thanks for the recommendation, it used to work for me too, but i stopped using it just because Proton works fine even without creating account(if you install in from Google Play, but doesn’t give any config files to export).

Can you please share an update on how well it works for you? I’m also living in a similar country where VPNs are blocked using DPI, and I’m preparing for alternative VPN solutions.
sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t, some servers usually work, some never do, some have Unusable speed. i rarely use Proton, i find that some servers rarely/never work in peak times, maybe they are overloaded or maybe my internet is just bad. i don’t know this is not a definitive conclusion but it probably works way better if you could use those paid servers, keep an i out for Proton-custom Wiregaurd too
