Protons pricing takes away from their privacy significantly

how many domain can you use with them ?

If this is the logic you are following after all the right things Proton has done and other private tools and products do made by good companies - then following your logic, donā€™t trust any and donā€™t use any.

I really donā€™t see a valuable point of this post than to simply vent about what you think and it feels like youā€™re asking for validation for a opinion that you think is controversial. If you donā€™t like something, donā€™t use it.

This is fear mongering and is not going to happen since they have paid products and donā€™t make the user the product AND they have moved to a non-profit structure. This is literally a moot concern.

If you donā€™t like it, donā€™t buy it.

Thanks to a previous Black Friday sale, Iā€™m paying the equivalent of just under $8 per month for the unlimited plan. I am happy with Protonā€™s service and have been for many years.

Itā€™s ok if you donā€™t like their pricing and think they are too expensive. You seem to have found an alternative you like. Thatā€™s great! It is good for there to be competition.

But starting a thread to complain seems really weird.

I donā€™t agree with blindly putting my trust into any company. Thatā€™s why I care if things are open source, even if they are made by ā€œgood companies.ā€

I donā€™t think my opinion is controversial. I genuinely just want to bring awareness of this, because itā€™s way worse than it has to be for an end user who wants to pay monthly. And Iā€™m not using it, but I want to.

Hopefully it doesnā€™t happen, but neither you, me, or the proton team knows what will happen in a year, two years, or five years. Itā€™s definitely possible, although improbable, and I think the end user should still take that probability into account.

I get where you are coming from, but I really just want to address these issues which undoubtedly exist. Iā€™m not trying to fear monger, I still genuinely enjoy their products and wished they were a good fit for me.

Last time I wanted to refund my, they asked me to cancel my subscription first and then I got my money back the same way I paid for the plan.

So XYZ company should be distrusted because they can turn evil. But I use ABC company because I trust them to not turn evil. Is this the premise of this thread?

Why are there so many threads making attacks on projects they donā€™t like or use, while ignoring the same stuff from the providers they use (like that filen thread earlier, that Tuta thread earlier, etc.) Is everyone using PG for validation of their usage patterns instead of actual best practices?

Ultimately Protonā€™s (or any other projectā€™s) pricing does not take away from their privacy and security. Itā€™s just how the company ensures they remain profitable and sustainable. Nobody is accusing Mullvad of taking away privacy because they donā€™t have a free tier (neither should they be accused).

Is privacy community just incapable of handling a successful company in the space lol? Also this is exactly why larger projects like Proton, Signal, etc. donā€™t engage with community much outside of their users - They just keep getting accused of being compromises because they are so successful at mainstreaming privacy, instead of something only ā€œhackermanā€ or ā€œintelligentā€ people care about.

I have no idea, but itā€™s getting more and more common and itā€™s very annoying.

@team should do something about these baseless attacks and FUD.
