Proton Mail now supports post-quantum encryption

I suspect they are delaying the roll out since there are apparently some issues.

yeah i saw the button before but it disappeared. I deliberately wait a few weeks with these things. Crypto is hard :D.

In the end they will also have to re-encrypt all the old data.

One of the issue regarding opengpg v6 keys ,is that they might not be compatible with other applications or email providers outside as opengpg v6 is fairly new and very low adoption. Its mentioned protons help article too.

There is also a divide between Gnupg and openpgp regarding the new specs , so gnupg have forked their won specs called Librepgp. Gnupg is the toolchain used by most applications currently. There is seqouia pgp toolchain which supports openpgpv6 but adoption is limited.

They confirmed this on Reddit:

UPDATE: We are aware of reports of Proton Drive for Windows users experiencing sync issues after enabling post-quantum encryption. We’ve temporarily disabled the opt-in to this feature and a fix is in progress. We will provide an update as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience!

Why is this not enabled by default?

Probably because they will want to slowly roll this out and provide the option to a first pool of users

Interesting, any idea why this would the the case, from a logistical standpoint? I know when Signal upgraded to PQE it was for all users, I believe anyway.

It will be interesting to see how Tuta positions themselves now, as they have always been the PQE email provider.

Well because encryption is hard and there might still be issues and user errors. It is not a strange thing to then roll it out slowly so you have the capacity to deal with support requests.
