Do you not see that saying nobody should leave Proton because of their political viewpoints is equally as ridiculous as saying everyone should leave Proton because of their political viewpoints.

No, its not even in the same ballpark. Most reasonable people literally don’t care nor should care unless they change the technical aspects. I wouldn’t care at all if tomorrow they changed their logo to a trans flag.

Ultimately, people have the freedom of thought. However, I would advise against blindly following the crowd and instead taking the time to form your own opinions. While social media statements do not impact Protons’ reputation for privacy and security, it is perfectly valid for individuals to decide to hold Protons words against them based on their own beliefs. I believe this situation can be resolved amicably without the harassment which has unfortunately been characteristic of similar events in the privacy community. It goes without saying that harassment directed towards anyone on either side should not and will not be tolerated.

Lets remain civil and encourage others to do the same. :slightly_smiling_face:

Our hero in times of need.

:no_mouth:

I think (and hope so) Proton’s going to handle this/recover from this.

I’ve also seen people calling Andy & Proton names (Reddit, X, Mastodon… heck, even in this forum) and most of them were coming from extreme-leftists, which is ironical, they’re not that much different from the people they despise.

Anyways, things got out of control and this is becoming more like a drama.

Just hopping in here, every post by a team member is their own opinion, if something is a statement from PG , then it will be posted on the website and the official PG social media accounts :).

I think so too, I really don’t see this having a long lasting impact on them. Ultimately it stems from poor judgement more than any malice or ill-intent.

This is why extremes are always bad and the unfortunate irony is that extreme left and right wingers are more alike than they would like to admit.

Flag posts and hopefully a mod will deal with it. :+1:

Yeah wasn’t meant to imply it was an official statement, was mostly trying to cool some heads as there definitely is value in a discussion about trust and how bad opinions can violate it, but the title of this topic was significantly more inflammatory at the time and distracted people into trying to fight about nothing (as they still do…)

Andy did login to proton team official reddit account, the u/Proton_Team and posting their reclarification using that account though. Not sure what would people seen from that action, official proton statement? Personal opinion from an individual? Imho thats poor judgement 101, shouldn’t dragged a company official communication account to post what might’ve been your personal opinion.

I’m not sure that I’d like to support a business ran by murderous maniacs. What are they going to do with my money? Kill my family? In the end they are murderous maniacs, right?

If they make the best shit, i really don’t care what they do with my money. Its their problem not mine. Regardless, it was a hypothetical scenario to respond to jonah’s logic which i disagreed with.

You should care, that is what I’m challenging in your logic.

As you seem to like reductive arguments a lot, if Andy had instead said something about how encryption helps criminals hide, it would clearly not look good for proton which is a company built on trust and the idea that they can provide privacy and security at a comparatively low cost.

For some people a political opinion holds weight, perhaps more than it should, but it is true that proton’s official account made a post defending the initial statement. This can clearly violate the core premise of proton’s business which is trust, and people are free to go to a different service even if you for some reason take it as a personal attack when they do.

I’ll drop you a pm to not risk being off topic.

Yes that would be concerning. To clarify are you saying that just the support for any right-wing ideas would lead or equate to this authoritarian idea? It would be a slippery slope not a reductive argument.

No, I am making the most neutral statement possible and yet you infer something about my political beliefs from it so you clearly have an agenda. I personally see nothing wrong with what Andy did even if I think it’s highly unprofessional and harmful for proton as a brand.

CEOs are still human even if they sometimes don’t act like it, so having an opinion isn’t crazy.

Im literally asking a question so i don’t argue with an point you didnt make.

Andy’s critiques of Democrats are accurate, but my concern is him thinking an administration run by billionaires and big tech CEOs is “for the little guy,” and praising their selection of a former big tech lobbyist to head up antitrust.

We are facing down the most potentially privacy and freedom hostile administration of my lifetime. The value of Proton lies entirely in trusting them to protect our privacy from that via both their technology and their business practices. Why on earth should I trust that after a bizarre statement like that - and then tripling down on it?

Criticize Democrats, go right ahead. But when you’re putting your blinders to the bigger threats we face that’s a very bad sign.

I have, and I’ve seen a few people saying they personally will (or might consider) dropping their subscription (a valid position), but I haven’t seen the so-called “call to action to all drop Proton” on reddit or here in this thread. Maybe a few have, but most haven’t.

Being the proton guy does not make him infallible, the real mistake that was made was logging onto the official proton account to defend himself after his pride was hurt.
At this point it’s almost like a curse to eventually have someone at a large company say something dumb and then use improper means to defend their ego.
