Organic Maps adding KAYAK referral links to mobile app

Yes… But free plans are not free, they are funded by the paying customers, and only sustainable so long as enough people are willing to pay for the service to sustain all non-paying customers.

Wait, what?

Well, partly true…

True…

But what all above have to do with topic in question?

It has very little to do with the topic in question, I wasn’t the one who brought it up (but you upvoted/‘liked’ the other person’s comment who did bring it up…)

Exactly.

Thats entirely possible. I liked it not because the person brought this up, but because I agree with what was written there.

But you just told me it was off topic and not relevant?

Oh, I now know you mean
My mistake. Must have clicked 1 time too much.

I don’t get it, if the Kayak affiliate links bother you you just don’t click on them and that’s it.
The problem with some of you is that you want everything to be exactly the way YOU want it, but how do devs make money without that?
Don’t click, I’m not doing it and everything’s fine, just expand, you don’t have to.

Let’s stop with any personal attacks now or we’re going to have to moderate this thread.

OK will stop. Just one quick question: who is we?

@wojciechxtx In response to your previous message, which was flagged and deleted (not by me), I wanted to say that it’s not important to find affiliate links on hotels, just don’t click on them to avoid tracking. OM continues to be open source and privacy friendly as long as you don’t click on those links. It’s a “non-intrusive” way for developers to make money because it’s largely avoidable.

I fully understand, but still: this is not what this topic is all about.

Its not about (not) clicking on links, its about existance of these links and the way addition of these links has been communicated.

On the iOS app store it was communicated in the change logs:

Added a button to see photos, reviews, and prices for some hotels. Every booking made through the app contributes to the development of the project!

It’s pretty clear that this is an affiliate link IMHO.

Would I prefer to not have these in the app? Yes.
Do I understand that the OM dev needs to eat, too? Yes.
Will I continue to use OM with the Kayak links? Yes.
Will I continue to use OM if the dev adds more and more of these things? Probably not.

“We” is the PrivacyGuides mods.

What the?!

Here is that discussion

OM devs are completely ignoring users…

Totally agree. This links added against community ideas, ignoring community feedback and opinions.

Plus they added one of the most tracking website as a link.

Tbh, I don’t understand why Organic maps exist in the first place. If you need just navigation, you can use OsmAnd. Magic Earth already provides all functionality as well as some traffic data. It’s not open source, but has a decent privacy policy.

Osmand is a hell of a thing to configure, with far too many options, as opposed to being simple and quick to learn.
That’s why OM is such a success.

Seriously?! They wiped my comment with arguments against this.

I am thinking the same. It’s been mostly a communication error. They should just have introduced it with hey guys we like to keep this project going. This is a solution we found to give us some income to continue working on this. If thye had enough donations they probably wouldn’t have to do this.

But what is really missing is an indicator in the app that this is an ad or referral (whatever, same,
same, but same). It’s not informing the user that they will be tracked and that is an issue for an otherwise privacy respecting app.

Well I actually use organic maps as it is really well designed and works fully offline. It feels like a propper app unlike the other osm apps who feel like I am running windows xp on my phone.
