Mozilla refocusing on Firefox and 'responsible AI', and cutting costs in other areas

The comparison about different browsers and who will surpass is a meaningless discussion. Unless operating systems stop promoting their browsers and search engines how on earth a fork can surpass chrome or edge. Why do you think that Google pays billions of dollars to Apple to be the default browser? It’s not charity.

My 2c, you are right in your belief that AI is currently way overhyped, and current capabilities are exaggerated, but it would be wrong to throw the baby out with the bath water. “AI” & ML can (and already is) solving problems, and doing useful things for people.

And first movers in a market are often the ones that have the greatest influence over shaping it for decades to come. Regardless of whether you think AI is or is not a useful thing, it is the direction the tech world is currently focusing, and I think having at least one stakeholder like Mozilla that is actually focused on the public interest, is better than the current reality where the same oligopoly of tech conglomerates and billionaires responsible for the enshittification of our current digital world, will be the ones shaping our next digital world.

Update:

The initial reporting that Mozilla’s just-released data removal service was being scaled back was incorrect. Techcrunch acknowledged their mistake and has retracted and corrected that statement.

Correction: in a previous version, we said Mozilla only launched its Online Footprint Scrubber last week. What Mozilla launched last week was a somewhat similar but different product, Mozilla Monitor. We have updated the story to reflect that.

This is an aptly timed example of why I was recommending not jumping to conclusions too soon based on thin and insufficient information. And waiting for more context before forming strong opinions.

And one new bit of info I haven’t seen reported yet comes from Bloomberg News:

“We’re scaling back investment in some product areas in order to focus on areas that we feel have the greatest chance of success,” Mozilla said in a statement. “We intend to re-prioritize resources against products like Firefox Mobile, where there’s a significant opportunity to grow and establish a better model for the industry.”

That’s exciting! When Firefox on Android gets per-site isolation, it will probably be the best mobile browser due to add-on support (IMO)!

Why are you looking at me when saying that :joy:
