Lawyer Oyer - PSA: How FBI and DHS can access your phone or email account

I’m not a journalist, but I think what happened to the WaPo journalist is a good threat model for everyone to follow. That should be the baseline for everyone. Government/law enforcement intrusion and unlawful access or going on a fishing expedition needs to be countered.

Great news everyone: a Judge has said the government can’t look at this reporter phone. Instead, the judge itself will have access.

In some way, it is even stronger than a passphrase. A passphrase can theoretically be captured by a CCTV camera. The PIN will also, but not enough to unlock the phone. Plus, your phone will reboot after 12 hours (default), so after that investigators will be unable to unlock it (if you never reboot/start your phone in public)
