# Is OpenBubbles a safe app to use? It allows for iMessages on Android

I just randomly discovered the app [**OpenBubbles**](https://openbubbles.app/), which apparently allows you to send iMessages from an Android phone. The app is apparently open-sourced, and claims to protect your privacy.

I had an iPhone years ago, and despite no longer having one, I still maintain my Apple ID and iCloud account. Most of my phone contacts are saved there, as I don’t save contacts on Android.

I have friends who use iPhone but are reluctant to use Signal, and yet are on WhatsApp, which I don’t want to use to talk to them. iMessage is arguably better for privacy than WhatsApp, hence I was hoping that with OpenBubbles I could message my friends on iMessage from my Android phone with my Apple ID account.

**Has anyone ever used it? Is it safe?**

Enabling OpenBubbles requires a Mac to set up, which I have access to through a relative. OpenBubble claims that none of my Apple ID infor will be saved on the Mac.

I would appreciate your feedback on this.

As long as OpenBubbles is running only on your hardware, you should be somewhat safe from data collection.

However, I emphasize that Signal is the best way forward. OpenBubbles should be considered harm reduction at best.

and even then RCS exist on Apple devices and on the android side it’s google messages and samsung
