I think thats just their opinion though it is true that the vast majority of people would be served just fine by a non-flagship device.
I am very happy with GrapheneOS on my Pixel 8 Pro.

Would you recommend switching to pixel 9 pro xl from a 14 pro max? For using graphene os. What advantages can one achieve that can’t be achieved from iPhone itself. Is a Gos pixel the only choice for privacy? That seems rather limiting given the performance of the processor and battery efficiency.
It is certainly the best option. The next best option is an iPhone which you already have.
I have an 8 Pro not a 9 Pro so I can’t speak from first hand experience with a 9 Pro. However, while the processors aren’t the fastest available it makes no difference in real world applications besides demanding mobile games. Battery life has improved significantly in the past couple of generations and will with all likelihood improve even more with the Pixel 10 which will use a 3nm node plus the fact that Google has indicated battery life will be a high priority.
Yes I would as long as you can sell your 14 pro max for a decent price since it’s still a relatively new device. GrapheneOS is significantly more secure than an iPhone which is the main advantage. Privacy wise it’s certainly better in terms of privacy from Apple (or Google on stock Pixels) and roughly on par with an iPhone in terms of privacy from apps.
Since you have a fairly new iPhone though you might prefer to wait ~6 months until the Pixel 10 series arrives at which point you can either buy that, or get a Pixel 9 Pro XL for a significant discount.
Being able to turn off internet access and device sensor permission on a per app basis is huge privacy wise. Also being able to restrict an apps access to your contacts to only those you select (contact scopes) is really practical!
This honestly demonstrates why I’m waiting for my pixel to be EOL before making a purchase. As Google keeps improving their devices including battery life I might as well wait until my pixel 7 is end of life then get the latest pixel which will serve me for the next 7 years now.
(that is unless they significantly nerfed the gpu, google do be making weird decisions here and we still dont know how the IMG GPU that was revealed to perform but I hope they do not nerf it because otherwise I’ll probably skip buying pixels then and probably forever if they continue)
What I hate is that iPhones in China actually have this but Apple just doesn’t enable that feature in other countries. Why, Apple?
wait what which one?
I’m pretty sure it is available in other countries soo ???
The internet permission, NFC permission, etc. I’m not sure about sensors.
iPhones now have contact scopes
