Introducing Obscura VPN for Android

Hi folks, we wanted to update the community that Obscura is now available on Android. We currently have releases available on Google Play and Obtainium. We’re also working on publishing versions for other alternative Android app stores.

Native Windows and Linux apps are also currently in development!

Which package format will the Linux app be in?

We plan to support .deb (Debian/Ubuntu), .rpm (Fedora), and PKGBUILD (Arch) at launch. We also plan to look into additional packaging options such as Flatpak. Let us know if you’d like to see us support a specific packaging format for Linux.

That’s good to know.

As long as the app with the GUI is well made and isn’t as problematic as sometimes how ProtonVPN’s GUI can be on Linux.

Deep and fool proof VPN integration such that the killswitch works stupendously and equally as much as how setting up your VPN via WireGuard through CLI would be - is how and what I am expecting. So please ensure of this.

Looking forward to testing it. Thanks.

Flatpak would be amazing so it can be sandboxed by default. I’m also kind of curious if you would consider making a Snap package for the same reason.

Is this a better format for an app than the OS specific version of it, when it comes to VPNs?

If it has a CLI version it’s probably good enough for me. I don’t use OpenWrt personally, but I’d wonder if an OpenWrt package would be appreciated for people running a VPN on-router. pfSense, OPNsense?

Is PG considering Obscura as a recommended VPN?

Have y’all looked at enabling MTE for the Android app? I know GrapheneOS users would appreciate knowing it works properly with MTE enabled.

See Obscura VPN for that.

We haven’t had many users request a Snap package. From what we’ve seen from our community, users tend to prefer Flatpak over Snaps. So we don’t currently have plans for a Snap package, but we’ll re-evaluate if we see more demand

We are currently working on an Obscura CLI, it should be available in alpha soon.

OpenWrt and OPNsense are on our radar, we currently have them listed on our waitlist

We’re looking into this now. We’re planning on doing some more testing later this week.

I had forgotten when Obscura was first posted here I set up an email notification about the Android app release. Wonderful to see the stable release happen.

Who’s behind Obscura? Parent company, money dependencies, etc.

If it comes to supporting Windows as well, I’d like to give it a go.

I can’t wait for Windows ,ver be released
