I’ve got like 2 or 3, extremely unreliable, and some not even powering up. Im not sure what is inside those, probably nothing important, but who knows since I cannot clearly remember what was copied there. Back then I was not even using full disk encryption. Id rather physically discard them. However I have never done this before on such drives. I don’t see a way to open the plastic shield. Will a hammer and a screwdrive break it? what part should I guarantee that I break inside when I break the plastic?
Pliers or hammer and screwdriver to open. Make sure to use the hammer&screwdriver on all of the large chips inside, too. Don’t be gentle about it. 
Do wear eye protection though.
If you can open up the plastic case the “most important” part to destroy would be NAND Flash memory chip, since that is where your data is stored. However, it may be easier to simply shred the entire drive.
Usually opening the case on these drives isn’t that hard so you should be able to open it up with a screw driver and some force.
Put them in the microwave for 5-10 seconds.

As kids we were always interested in destroying things, finding out how they work. These little devices are made out of silicon/plastic. Heat up a knife and cut the circuit board in half. Melt the chips, heat will destroy anything. Let it out in the exposed environment, in the rain/snow. Pin it to a table, use a drill to drill holes in the chips lol.

Because sometimes, usb key need to be low level formated to be restore in a working state.
I tried to access them on linux. One doesn’t have any power, other sort of shows up but it seems to be cooked. I honestly don’t want to spend an evening on this because there’s probably useless stuff on them however as younever know if you saved some passwords there I was looking to open it and wreck them and throw them into the trash.
The enclosure is a really hard plastic, im not seeing a way to open it other than smashing it with a hammer aiming at the plastic with a screwdriver or something. This is sort of messy so I keep delaying doing it but I will eventually to get to it. As far as microwaving and so on, I find these things crazy, like why would you put stuff that you use to cook in there to get some silicon and rare earth fumes, should be easier to hammer it I guess.
