FOSS Websites to watch anime privately?

Looking for FOSS websites to watch anime with no tracking. Front-ends are fine too.

I’m not sure if that’s a thing outside of piracy…?
Anyone else can correct me if I’m wrong, but a lot of media, including anime, regular shows, and movies, is strictly licensed to specific streaming platforms like Crunchyroll and Netflix. Anime, specifically, is notoriously difficult and expensive to license because of Japanese copyright, so only big sites that can afford it are able to show it. And even then, big platforms may also struggle with licensing certain shows (I believe Crunchyroll had some major problems licensing Evangelion.)

Such sites have no interest in privacy or anything open source. So, legally, your best bet is to watch whatever shows are uploaded to YouTube through a frontend like FreeTube, or create a throwaway Crunchyroll account and watch shows that are available for free. Illegally, there are a bunch of options, some of which are open source. But I don’t think it’s allowed to freely discuss piracy here.

off topic

It’s a shame that nowadays piracy offers a better experience, without ads, regional restrictions, and for free, compared to paid websites that are getting clunkier to use, more expensive, and have limited libraries to choose from.

I believe grayjay has a crunchyroll plugin. Requires payment obviously

web.stremio.com is open source iirc. It may still have tracking.

TorBox apparently doesn’t log IPs and accepts cryptocurrency. It’s $3/month.

You need to make an account and install addons to use stremio. I recommend https://duck-tools.pages.dev for convenience. You can self host the addons or use the hosted ones but they will definitely be more privacy respecting then say Netflix.

I’m talking about streaming sites that are FOSS and privacy respecting that get content by sailing the seven seas

It is sailing. You can also not pay but it’s torrent based so it’s not gonna stream as well. Stremio with good addons(like duckstreams) are the best option for that.

For dedicated sites besides stremio you will get worse quality and experience.

Here’s some: Streaming · fmhy/FMHY Wiki · GitHub

Many have zero trackers and are open source(like p stream).

I’ve used Stremio before, the videos were INCREDIBLY LAGGY. And the reason why I want sites is because applications have more problems.

You were likely torrenting without caching long enough or your hardware wasn’t powerful enough for the file size or your internet was too slow for the file size.

With a Debrid service like TorBox it removes the speed limit of torrenting so it would be one of the other issues. You can choose smaller files or change the sort with your addons.

Likely wasn’t the internet. My internet was very fast back then (I got a new ISP now and their plan honestly kind of sucks, but I haven’t gotten myself to change to the old ISP or use a different one yet)

this is privacy guides forum, not piracy guides

Pirating is way more private than the traditional streaming stack.

Welcome to the forum :slightly_smiling_face:

pirating is also a large security risk. the most private way to watch media is buying bluray or dvd.
