> The EU’s age verification project confirms hardware-bound attestation is mandatory, raising concerns over Linux, custom ROMs, and open-source access.

> “_Hardware-bound attestation is a requirement of this project, not an implementation detail we can simply drop_,” [a maintainer responded](https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/av-app-android-wallet-ui/issues/117#issuecomment-4946898620). The project invited alternative architectural proposals and said a dedicated security review and threat model would be published soon.

I swear to god the EU always strengthens the iOS/Android Duopoly they claim to fight.

Here is GrapheneOS take on it: [GrapheneOS (@GrapheneOS): "Using hardware attestation won't achieve anything when it comes to age verification. It will lock people into using iOS or Google certified Android for those apps. Governments apps in the EU are among the worst offenders for banning using alternatives to iOS and GMS Android." | XCancel](https://xcancel.com/GrapheneOS/status/2085187538260500634#m)

Everything about age verification is bad.

Adding EU administrative and technical incompetence adds a new layer of awful.
