Difficulty of tracking a PC vs a cell phone

A wired computer is harder to track than a cellphone. Unless you disable WIFI and cellular connection on the phone.

How are you gonna triangulate my hardwired computer ?

What about wireless computers? As in computers with WiFi adapters?

Some people don’t have access to wired computers for whatever reasons.

Wifi is a risk from what I understand, for example your neightbours Wifi, even if you don’t connect to them, may be use for geolocalisation.

If some has your IP and can force your ISP to give them the IPs address, then they can get your location.

Yes, but in my country this require a warant. That’s admitting my VPN malfunction in the first place.

And it does not adress Anon46442 general claim against computer and I guess all Linux distros.

Which general claim?

To triangulate a cellular position, you probably also need a warrant and of before that you need to get the phone number / cellular IP, so you already assume that other messaures like a VPN have failed.

Do you mean this?

The cellphone company have been cauhgt tracking phone and selling this data right ?

yes, 99% of computers as stated include a lot of different OS, including Mac, windows and many linux distros.

I would say more, but me previous post was censored for reason I honestly don’t understand.

I am trying to remain respectfull and do positive contribution to the forum, I am not perfect but I don’t understand why my last post was removed.

If you’re talking about this post, if I remember the content correctly, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it besides it was off-topic in that thread. You should be fine to post it here.

That GrapheneOS is more secure is a true fact.

That doesn’t mean you should not use desktop for anything

By ‘track’, we mean ‘identify your physical location’? Then yeah, desktops generally have fewer location services available to them.

  • GNSS chip is not usually installed
  • Cellular Modem is not usually installed
  • IP geolocation will still be available, barring a network proxy
  • Depending on hardware configuration, desktops may still be subject to WiFi Positioning or BLE Mesh Network tracking

Not sure what country you’re in but in Australia police can access all telecommunications records without a warrant. This includes location data from cellular towers.

Yes, and even laptop are easier to safeguard agains tracking.

For example, in the bios you may disable WIFI and Bluetooth.

I read recently someone was surprise that his mom smarphone with no data plan was still able to be updated on google location sharing. The phone was still being track by other citizens smartphones and possibly other methods. That’s a good reminder that smartphone are not private.

If you connect through a VPN to a website, the website cannot see your IP, and even if they have it, they could not locate you more then with the IP from a desktop (if both are in the same router, the have the same IP anyway)

The advantage of a phone (preferably with GrapheneOS) is that its security measures are far stronger then the ones used by PCs.

in regard of VPN, sure, I though everyone knew that on the forum.

You seem to discuss a unique scenario about a web server access through VPN.I was talking about company tracking in general, sorry I did not wrote clear comments.

I know Graphene is the best Mobile OS. But it’s not better than many Linux distros, Are you claiming GrapheneOS is better than a wired computer with Linux ?

In general its not harder to determine the location of a Wifi, over the location of a sim card for your ISP (and the government if the subpoena the ISP).

But if a company has neither your IP nor your phone number, they cannot determine your location over this way.

Or to what form of cellular tracking are you reffering?

This comparison is completely apples to oranges. What am I supposed to do, lug a full desktop around with an Ethernet cable trailing behind me every time I leave the house?

no, but I don’t use a cell phone for any serious use.
