Data Brokers Know Everything About You (Interview with Yael Grauer)

Data brokerage is a billion-dollar industry built on selling your personal information without your knowledge or consent. In this video, we uncover the shady world of data brokers with investigative reporter @yaelwrites (Consumer Reports) to find out how they operate and what you can do about it.

Hey everyone, by popular demand we’ve put together another interview style video - this video was a long time in the making and I think it’s the highest quality video we’ve put out yet.

I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the video and I hope you learn something

It really seems like getting your data wiped is way easier in the EU. Sure, it still takes time and multiple tries, but the US just feels like the Wild West when it comes to that stuff. Anyway, great video!

Yael is great! I’ll definitely have to check this out.

Excellent video @jordan!

A couple things (non video content related):

  1. I obviously understand why new content is for members only. However, if you/PG do ever make a quick video on a time sensitive topic that would behoove everyone to know right away, would you be releasing them at once or still to members only first?
  2. Can I request a higher resolution video upload? Anything more than just 1080p? I’d appreciate that!

Thank you! Please let us know.

Btw, the email newsletter we receive just as the videos come out with the sources listed right there in it is brilliant! That was a good call/decision. It’s the easiest way to get people to read and learn more right away about the topic - may encourage more engagement with the subject matter at large too.

We won’t paywall time sensitive content. Think grassroots campaigns or emergency call to actions. That won’t be fair for folks anyways!

Most of the temporarily pay-walled content won’t fall into this category anyways.

This is obviously geared towards the US. Is there a guide relevant to the EU?

EU residents can refer to this guide by noyb to draft and send GDPR deletion requests, which also applies to data brokers.

But are there any resources where I can find a list of relevant data brokers? Most of the ones listed by Yael Grauer seem to be specific to the US.

Yes of course if there is a topic that is time sensitive it will still be published promptly (like the video about age verification) however we don’t really focus on news/timely content that much anyway so I’m not sure this will happen to often. We want to give back to our members who are helping to keep Privacy Guides running.

I believe this could be a PeerTube specific issue, as it is 4k on YouTube. However I had a lot of issues getting this video rendered unfortunately so the timeline isn’t 4k it’s just upscaled 1080p.

Editing on a 4k timeline is quite intensive and tends to bog down my computer (and I have a pretty good one) so I’ve been doing the editing in a 1080p timeline and moving everything to a 4k timeline for the final render, this is where I’ve been having issues with DaVinci Resolve getting stuck while rendering.

Thanks for getting back and explaining.

Hypothetically, would it be possible for you to send me the material, for instance, if you already knew the settings you want the job to be done with? I have NVIDIA 5090, 4090, and 5080 cards available. So, it wouldn’t be a problem even if a machine is tied up with the task for a longer period. I haven’t really used DaVinci before, but I do have experience with various modeling programs.

I noticed that the Studio license is a one-time payment of €320-399, which doesn’t sound too bad.

There’s no particular reason for this, but many of my devices are just sitting idle, and it would be interesting to test what they are capable of.

edit. Yeah, I’m thinking a bit about myself here, since all my displays and my TV are 4K. And 1080p just seems totally outdated, like it’s from ten years ago. Of course, there’s YouTube and upscaling, but that’s not really what I’m looking for… I’m definitely curious if upscaling can be done somehow without Google.

edit2. What I meant, of course, was that I’d send it back so you could put the video online for everyone. You shouldn’t bother doing all that just for me.

Can someone be so kind as to post a link to the list of data brokers she refers to where she has them in categories showing the most important ones if you’re time constrained? I didn’t receive the links in my email because I have PG emails turned off in my settings and I can’t seem to find it anywhere else. Thanks

Do you mean our list or Yael’s list?

What gets emailed out is the same as what’s published on the website: https://www.privacyguides.org/videos/2025/10/28/data-brokers-know-everything-about-you/

I’d never even heard of Affinity, so I just figured you were using Adobe. That means no pricey license to worry about.

Thank you very much for this contribution . It’s great to see collaboration with established consumer organizations. This gives greater reach, even in the non-techie scene. Thank you again for the great contribution.

Yael’s list, I couldn’t find it on Consumer Reports
