# Crossing a border with a GrapheneOS phone.. how to minimise what could be compromised

I know iPhones are really great for this, AFAIK you can just back up the entire contents with ADP and then reinstall and everything will be there.

What is the best equivalent for GOS? As I understand Seedvault is not very reliable.

I suppose you could just delete more sensitive apps and then reinstall, such as deleting:

1. Messenger
2. Password app
3. 2FA app

Thing is I have back ups of all this too. Like a folder, where Signal backs up to, same with my 2FA app etc. and I don’t want to delete those as they are connected to my Syncthing.. So would it be okay to leave the actual files on there? They are encrypted, and cannot be opened on the phone itself without reinstalling the apps. I’m not sure if they would go to that effort.

Not too sure honestly, but I would appreciate any input.

I’m just a regular person FYI, not a person of interest.

I would say it depends on your threat model and where you are travelling to.

Is it normal for people to be asked to unlock their phones on that border? There are borders where I haven’t heard a single story like this. There are borders where it is the norm.

If you haven’t heard of a person needing to show the content of their phone then you could just risk it and not do anything.

What do you actually want to protect? Is it your messaging history? Maybe some photos? Maybe some files? Then delete those.

If they check your phone at the border using Cellebrite and see that data has been deleted, they might not let you in. Just bring a cheap Chinese phone with a separate SIM card, after using it for about a month beforehand: download some entertainment apps like TikTok and check out the videos and pictures there, take pictures of nice cars, dogs, and groceries at the store, save some numbers and call them (wife, gym, hair salon). Fully charge and fully discharge your phone as often as possible to show that you’ve actually been using it. Don’t bring your Pixel with you.

I would advise not to count on encryption for border pass (but of course, keep it against other threats).

Either there is no control and encryption is useless, or there is control and they’ll ask for your password, else you don’t enter the country.

Exception might be if you have some plausible deniability scheme like a Veracrypt vault, but that’s likely to identify you as a suspect in case of control.
