There seems to be a switch from X to Bluesky going on.

Thoughts on Bluesky?

It’s pretty great. The atmosphere on the site is very positive, and it’s pretty close to feature parody with Twitter. Many of the creators I follow are on there. The devs are working on a better discover feed and community notes, so I’m definitely interested in the future of this project

I love feature parody. It’s my favorite kind of feature. The kind where BlueSky clowns Twitter.

I really like Bluesky, so far. Only social media I am truly using.

Mastodon is great but IMO it is too much an echo buble. They are only left-wing, progressive, people. Not saying is bad but I am switching to BlueSky because there I can have a closer tl reality view.

I will admit that I don’t have any idea what left-wing, right-wing, and centrists mean, and I’m glad that this is the case. I don’t want to waste my headspace on such nonsense.

## Post 8 by @Regime6045 — 2024-11-13T15:27:51Z

Is it actually decentralized? If not, I don’t really see the point in promoting in over X (the incumbent) or Mastodon (federalized) and Nostr (decentralized).

I just haven’t found a reason to use any of these twitter like services in a meaningful way other then to generate rss feeds for my feeder app. X frontends such as xcancel (nitter instance) seem to be the best in that regard.

Agree 100%. The world happens on Twitter, there’s no reason to use anything else, unless for following any particular account you want to follow that’s only there.
Use nitter instances, squawker with a new account using an Adguard temp email, etc

The only reason for using anything else is oddly enough the exact reason most people use them. Not for privacy, but for being protected from seeing opposite opinions. If you’re a grown person who needs your safe space, there’s no lack of options: Mastodon, Threads, Reddit, Lemmy, Instagram, YouTube, Tiktok, and probably Bluesky as well. Even Gmail will spam-mark though crime as well.

I would like to migrate though to take some distance with Musk but I didn’t like Mastodon when I tried it and Bluesky is not enough populated yet.

As with any social network you need to put _some_ effort into choosing a few INTERESTING people to follow, maybe look at who’s following those and pick a few more … and your discovery stream will become useful.

It’s always been like this, to be honest. But the format itself does not induce conversation.

Ohh you beat me to it.

The best place for _some_ balanced conversation is Reddit on the less biased subs. On the night of the US elections, for example, subs like MapPorn were where you’d have to go for some balanced, insightful conversations.

Have you tried using a [News Aggregator](https://www.privacyguides.org/en/news-aggregators/?h=) instead? It basically functions as your own customized feed reader and allows you to not be stuck with just twitter feeds.

I personally use Feeder but there are multiple good options.

I feel like this is not true anymore? Hard to say since being private (so no real numbers), but lots of companies and users stopped using it. There hasn’t been a real switch (like what happened to digg) because the users switched to many different sites instead of just one (threads, mastodon, lemmy, now bluesky, etc.).

I think it’s kinda of weird to complain about the content of an algorithmic feed when you don’t give the feed anything to work with. Without that it’s probably just showing what is “viral” at this particularly point in time.

My “Discover” feed shows me mostly interesting posts/people.

While this is true, I still don’t get why bluesky chose against federating with activitypub considering that’s what everyone else uses. I don’t like the idea of constantly reinventing the wheel when it locks people out of the ecosystem.

Bluesky does have VC money, but is also supposed to be a public benefit LLC. Eventually they’ll need to make money to support the site, infra and staff, either with ads and/or subscriptions.

For self hosting, not sure what that brings. Fediverse has the large Mastodon codebase and some derivatives, and things like [gotosocial.org](http://gotosocial.org)

I’ll sit out from signing up and see how it develops. I see no pressure to join. I do like my Mastodon feeds. X is read only for me.

Most importantly bsky is not messing with your home feed, it’s in chronological order, as intended by the universe.

The possibility to create an infinite amount of custom feeds is also very nice.
Imagine being able to read about the things you actually want to see and not what some algorithm you have no control about decides for you.

> While I generally avoid politics on this blog, it’s hard to ignore the political biases permeating X and BlueSky. X has veered heavily toward far-right ideologies, while BlueSky is often associated with far-left communities. This polarized landscape doesn’t work for those of us seeking a neutral space for meaningful interactions. Mastodon’s structure, lacking an algorithm to push specific content, gives users freedom to create a feed that genuinely reflects their interests.

This is a good point. Unfortunately, it seems that some busybody Mastodon users have compiled large blacklists of “bad” servers and many servers won’t federate with others (okay, fine) and won’t federate with servers that don’t block other servers (wtf). In other words: server A defederates from server B but also threatens to defederate from server C if server C doesn’t defederate from server B, too. So over time you end up with more and more sub-networks that don’t speak with each other, which makes the whole idea of federation a bit pointless. I think blacklisting/whitelisting should only happen on the user level, not server level, but here we are. Good luck finding a homeserver where you can communicate with the _whole_ Mastodon universe without your admin blocking other servers for political reasons or those servers blocking yours.

---

## Post 38 by @anon42475305 — 2024-11-14T15:11:20Z

The solution is to avoid concentrating around a few servers so that they do not have the leverage to coerce other servers into aligning with their ideology. Unfortunately, many people just want an echo chamber of like-minded individuals, which is not constructive and only serves to inhibit meaningful discourse.

It’s worth noting that “far-left” in US terms means center, center-left or _slightly_ left on the rest of the planet.

---

## Post 40 by @anon42475305 — 2024-11-14T16:12:27Z

I think it’s a bit of an oversimplification to say these terms have universal meanings outside the US.

In my experience, a bigger issue with these new platforms like Bluesky is that even if the accounts you want to follow are on the platform, the discussion that follows is often minimal due to their smaller size.

This makes mastodon almost unusable in my opinion. Though in principle Mastodon is the superior platform, the state it currently is in is even worse than Twitter’s.

When you start seeing this kind of trend, it’s almost impossible to not be in an echo chamber, it’s either the far left or the far right one. Pick your poison.

I think that if Twitter had died, we would see a more interesting landscape. As it stands, most centrists or right-leaning individuals have little reason to move away from Twitter.

I think most people here would (for one reason or another) agree that it would be better if Twitter just died.

For me personally, I would like to see a federated system succeed, but I would also appreciate it if people took some time to really consider what such a system should look like. As it stands, many of these protocols have various flaws, and others are just ripoffs of Twitter, hoping to catch the attention of users looking for a new ‘home’.

It’s been awhile I’ve seen such excitement for a platform. Lots of medias calling this the X-odus. I see articles everyday on bluesky since Trump won. It’ll eventually settle down, but the fact it hasn’t died off yet with some celebrities leaving X, looks also promising.

DMs are also not E2EE, and thus visible to Bluesky.

## Post 52 by @Regime6045 — 2024-11-19T15:41:38Z

I think it will end up failing similar to the other Twitter alternatives (e.g. Threads, Mastodon, Pleroma, Nostr, Misskey, Truth Social, Gab) or any of the many Reddit alternatives (e.g. Lemmy, Kbin, Aether, Voat, Poast) or any of the Facebook alternatives (even Google+ failed!)…

The reason for that (a) people are generally lazy and don’t want to switch if they don’t have to, (b) most people remain unconvinced when the competing product isn’t really that much different or better, and (c) the network effect means that even those that are early adopters of a new platform will get tired if most of the action happens elsewhere.

Finally, 50 million Ned Flanders all being REALLY nice to each other (or else!) on Bluesky will never break out or make culture. When it comes to internet content people choose the junk food – the insults, the hate, the drama – every time. And X (the everything site), Tiktok, and Instagram will still have a monopoly on “can you believe they’re saying this???” type stuff that actually breaks through and grabs eyeballs.

I think this is an expectation issue…

Some of the alternatives you are calling a failure, are active and have millions of users.

Just like…Twitter?? Main page in Twitter is a “For you” feed based on algorithm and a “Following” feed with the posts from people you follow in chronological order.

Edit: correction: Twitter actually shows what you want to read. All of it. Bluesky is curating even your chronological-order feed with heavy censorship.

I don’t know… there wasn’t as much excitement for all of those, but this is a pretty subjective feeling. Threads grew way higher, but just because of exposure from Facebook.

Indeed. You can’t even private your account if some crowd starts targeting you — and let’s be honest, it’s going to happen sooner or later. Best you can do is deactivate your account and hope for the best. And that’s not to mention other privacy problems the platform which can’t be addressed due to the nature of platform.

I’ll say this though, it’s the best twitter alternative yet with its curation and all; perhaps it’ll have its year or two of hayday before it goes downhill like every other platform ever.

## Post 69 by @Alvah.Lind64 — 2024-11-22T10:28:04Z

Honestly after the Twitter Files scandal my biggest wishlist feature with any new social media platform is that it has robust censorship protection.

This is where self-hosting decentralisation often fails (see Mastodon’s echo chamber networks who don’t federate with each other) and where blockchain-based decentralisation is a much better fit.

For one see the endless complaints about federated identity on Mastodon, this sort of thing basically requires a blockchain in order to do it trustlessly whilst decentralised.

Having all public posts on an immutable ledger also means that censorship on desktop-based clients is much more difficult, as it’ll always be possible to modify the client to view all messages. This sort of platform can then also have a separate E2EE private messaging layer (e.g. utilising Matrix), whereas Bluesky currently only has unencrypted DMs and moderation in them too.

Bluesky currently brings little new to the table and it’s tech stack has too many weak points for censorship so I doubt it’ll topple X any time soon.

> **Nostr** ([acronym](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym) for **Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays** ) is an [open protocol](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_standard) for decentralized message transmission, with the intention to be able to resist [internet censorship](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship)[[2]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nostr#cite_note-2) while maintaining [session integrity](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authentication).

I don’t know anything about that project tbh, it sounds promising. Going to [their repo](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nostr) though it doesn’t seem to contain any code, when I’ve seen elsewhere claims that it’s open-source.

It depends what you mean by censhorship protection. IMO, there is a limit where one can spew hate without consequences. Tate was already banned on Bluesky which is a good thing.

There are some rules that need to be in place and need to be followed and the consequences for not respecting those rules could and should be a ban.

bluesky:

- main website ([bsky.social](https://bsky.social)) contains tracking from Google (google tag manager)
- [bsky.app](https://bsky.app) & their mobile apps contain tracking from Sentry & Statsig
- no way to opt out of this
- android app contains proprietary libraries like google play/firebase
- android app is only available from play store, can’t be installed from ex. accrescent or f-droid

in the grand scheme of things, these may seem like minor issues; but these are problems that similar widely adopted platforms in the space, such as mastodon and nostr, simply do not have. if bluesky claims to be “free and open”, and about giving users control, there’s no way around the fact that these issues must be addressed.

i’ve been using bluesky a good bit lately and overall i’ve enjoyed it, nice breath of fresh air, and it’s definitely far better than ex. X/twitter & facebook. but it leaves a lot to be desired in areas like this. only time will tell how it turns out :woman_shrugging:

This is true, but you forgot to mention that you can install it with Obtainium/GitHub at [https://github.com/bluesky-social/social-app/releases](https://github.com/bluesky-social/social-app/releases)

Sure, even though Bluesky has open-source app and protocol, in practice this will mostly be good to check the code and how their algorithms for BS work, so ==\> transparency. I don’t expect it to be FOSS or anything, this is Mastodon.

Maybe I should clarify. I mean extreme left : who believes AI Alt text are bad, that AI is just pure garbage, who say NYT is transphobic, etc.
.
Too much. Now on Bluesky I actually see topics I like.

True. This is what it looks like in the DNS log when you open the app on iOS:

At least you can block those trackers and the app still works fine.

I use uBO hardmode. Google Tag Manager is everywhere. I’m not saying this is good practice, but yeah, the bar’s pretty low nowadays unfortunately. Also, it’s pretty much impossible to get rid of Google when you realize re:captcha is everywhere and needs Google + gstatic to run.

Yep, but at least it’s not a hate platform. Again, the bar is pretty low nowadays lol…

I really honestly could not care less about social media. People who use it seem to inhabit a weird and different world with odd social norms and values. No one treats you like a person, because on these websites, you aren’t! You are a machine filled with attention that people want to take for themselves to satisfy their own ends, be it for ego, for money, or ideological indoctrination or whatever. I cannot understand the notion of keeping up with some friend or influencer or “the news” or whatever every single day or even week. If people live like that, they are probably missing out on something intrinsic in human experience.

I’m also surprised how long it took the “public”, if we can even call them that?, to figure out that federation is pretty cool. It just sucks that it’s from this Bluesky app I’ve never heard of before. Maybe it’s because there was never any good ones out there? IDK.

As someone who’s writing blogs and the only way I ever get to be discovered is through social media, it’s unfortunate if not for Twitter then for Bluesky perhaps. Just recently went to reddit to try and share my blog here and I’ve just realized what a [mess](https://www.reddit.com/r/gachagaming/comments/1hc7zvd/promo_ananta_game_is_either_going_to_go_big_or_go/) this community can be. And honestly this is in stark contrast to the same post [here I made, much better interaction than the other](https://www.reddit.com/r/AnantaOfficial/comments/1hc87kt/ananta_game_is_either_going_to_go_big_or_go_home/) which is a good example of what a mess social media can really be which validates your statement but also when it doesn’t have to be.
You don’t really need to understand anything to even get the stark contrast between them, the edits alone and the threads says alot.
However it does feel an obligation to use social media to get discovered so yeah, Maybe quite unfortunate but it is what it is.

That’s true if those rules are for everyone and not just one particular side but sadly, that doesn’t seem to be the case on most of these platforms.

When it comes to internet content people choose the junk food – the insults, the hate, the drama – every time. And X (the everything site), Tiktok, and Instagram will still have a monopoly on “can you believe they’re saying this???” type stuff that actually breaks through and grabs eyeballs.

Love the metaphors used here lol

I ran the site through Markup’s Blacklight but it was not able to detect any tracking. I was able to confirm that bsky.social does though.

PG forums is a form of social media. Do you feel that way about yourself? Seems a bit hypocritical to say things like this while using social media to do it.

## Post 89 by @olanography — 2024-12-22T02:36:24Z

Forums have been around for ages compared to modern social media as how it is depicted and used today. But yes, your point holds water. I should instead clarify what kind of social media I am referring to _and_ that it is a critique on the _culture_ of that social media usage, not necessarily social media itself. I see now how my comment is really reductive, which does not help further discussion.

So does that mean people who use bluesky can follow mastodon and other activity pub powered profiles and visa versa.

No cause it isn’t the same protocol. Just like you can’t E-mail someone to a SMS.

But once complete, this means anyone can spin up an instance (already can) and be fully compatible with official instances and other instance (just like Mastodon).

I think currently there is only “a credible exit” meaning if BSKY go shit, everyone can migrate to another plarform and keep their account (AFAIK).

unless these addresses have been taken down by carriers.

For the rest, good point!

But I kind of hate the idea of federation, because you can’t delete anything if it’s already on other instances. Don’t get me wrong, federation is cool for control, but like I said, it’s not so good for privacy. That’s why I avoid creating an account and interacting with others on Mastodon, etc.
