Adlock

I recently found out about Adlock [https://adlock.com/]. It works better than Adguard IMO. On their website, they state that the service has been operational for a decade. However, I could not find any social media handle. No subreddit, discord or YT.

I wanted to know if someone has (or is) used this service? Or is it trustworthy?

Thank you.

Correct URL:

Never heard of it. They should have been doing better PR. I see that as a red flag personally. I would not use this when you already have trustworthy alternatives that work just fine.

This is a paid service that seems to work like RethinkDNS: Using a local VPN to filter traffic.

According to its FAQ it requires the user to install a CA certificate to allow https filtering. This is a big security risk. I wonder why it is not allowed to be published on Google Play. Do not use AdLock.

Edit: I could find a social media account for adlock, which is banned.

Might I ask which social media platform?

This service is similar to Adguard. You install and app that creates a local VPN connection to filter traffic. You don’t need to install the CA if you don’t want. Just like adguard.

Could you please refer me to that banned account.

I found this post on reddit.

The account AdLock_official is banned from reddit.

It’s a very old post. But getting the Reddit account banned is quite suspicious.

Not really, can happen easily from using a VPN.

As soon as I entered the website I was met with one of those sketchy timers giving you a discount.

Not me.

No, I do not think so.

Here is a uBlock Origin static filter rule to block the panel script from loading:

||adlock.com/api/?type=banner&lang=/$xhr,1p

If you want an URL rule instead, here is the same rule from above in this format:

adlock.com https://adlock.com/api/?type=banner&lang=/ xmlhttprequest block

What about it works better than AdGuard? I personally have never heard of Adlock and would be quite apprehensive to just blindly trust them as a result.

I personally don’t use a system-wide local VPN on Android and stick to privacy-first apps and a system wide DNS to clean up the rest (along with a browser that supports extensions or content blocking).

I have a level of trust in AdGuard, but even I wouldn’t install a certificate blindly from them, much less Adlock which has never been on the radar in the blocking space for (allegedly) 10 years.

Adguard was unable to block ads in one of the apps I was using but adlock worked. I don’t know how but it did. So I was thinking of using. But I also had the same apprehensions. I had a hard time trusting Adguard a few years back and I am having the same issue with this product.

I would encourage you to report the missed ad(s) to AdGuard. They have a built-in reporting tool in their apps, but you can also do so via their AdGuard Filters GitHub page.

I have encountered missed ads when using the AdGuard for iOS app in Safari and they have been quick to respond and push out an update to address it via their filter lists.

I did that. I hope they fix that soon. Thanks for the recommendation.
