How does Rclone Crypt compare to Cryptomator in terms of security? Are there any red flags for why I should avoid using it? For my purposes, Rclone Crypt seems to perform a lot better for working with mounted remotes when I don’t have the storage space to sync the vaults to my device.
Rclone….Android. I’ve done some preliminary research but I’m getting pretty lost since it looks like notable projects have been abandoned or forked over the years. If I wanted access to my rclone crypt vaults on android, what’s the best recommendation in 2026?
Options on F-Droid appear to be Round Sync, RCX (abandoned?), RSAF, Termux?
Is it possible to view my rclone crypt files in other apps? For example, perhaps being able to view photos from my Rclone Crypt vault in Aves Gallery or another photo viewer so I can essentially have an E2EE cloud photo viewer?
I have 6 TB of Microsoft 365 storage that has been going to waste…
i can’t say much about cryptomator as i haven’t used it it but i did experiment with rclone a few years ago. I liked the flexibility with rclone as it worked well with mounted remotes. I think it has very good linux support.
But i had run into same issues as yours thats its compatibility on mobile devices like android was not very good. Rclone development had just started back then (seems to be no update for it now) . Haven’t tried rsaf , so i might try it out.
Termux would be nono for me , terminal on mobile devices is crazy
On your 3rd question, i would say it should be possible for other apps to access this data as well.
an update, i tried rsaf and it seemed to work good. you need to make a crypt remote for encryption. Will have to see if anything breaks in long term use.
i think this is possible but not natively as rclone mounts its remote as a network drive basically .The files in this mounted network drive get decrypted automatically but does not form part of the local storage. If an app has ability to show contents from a NAS (network storage) , you can chose to use it (for example keepassdx allows using db files stored in network storage) . If not then then use another automation tool which can constantly copy your data between your nas storage and actual local storage.
Thanks for trying it out. I tried it last night and can confirm that none of my photo viewers (Aves, GrapheneOS gallery, Ente (local only) )could see my Rclone photos even after enabling every permission
Curiously, I also tried plugging in a physical USB flash drive and Aves couldn’t see those photos either…. So basically Aves is limited to whatever measley storage I have on my Pixel’s internal storage it seems.
I could only see the Rclone files in the GrapheneOS files app and it looks like it’s mounted similarly to how other cloud services are mounted. Performance is very slow and I can’t view photo metadata. It’s even a worse photo viewing experience than viewing Proton Drive photos, which already is borderline worthless.
I could look into a sync software, but then I’m still bottlenecked by my phone’s limited storage space, which can only hold a fraction of the photos and videos I want to be able to view.
I was really hoping for an private solution that didn’t require me to self-host or pay for even more duplicative cloud storage. I miss having sd card slots on phones
